Incredible lyricist and Gangstarr frontman Keith "Guru" Elam passed away April 19th after a battle with cancer. He was just 43 years old. Now I grew up listening to Gangstarr thanks to my big bro. He had all of the Gangstarr tapes/CD's and his first two Jazzmatazz releases. Something about Gurus voice over Premiers beats was what my definition of hip-hop was as a kid. I have mixed feelings about this, because although Guru was a talented artist, after reading the letter Guru supposedly "wrote", he seems to bash a certain ex-dj. Now I personally don't know the background story behind Gangstarrs split, but it has come to my attention the bitterness Guru expressed towards Premier in interviews up till his passing. Seems like that Solar dude is on his business. To me when I think of Guru, Gangstarr is the first thing that comes to mind and nothing will ever change that. I'd have to say the groups 1998 album "Moment of Truth" is one of my favorite Hip-Hop albums of all-time. The first beat I rhymed on tape to was "You Know My Steez"! So rest in peace Guru, you truly were and are...Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal. PeaceUPDATE: Guru's family issues statement READ HERE.
