Jam of the Week - Danny Boy - Steppin'
This is my jam! Fresh from 4/20, Death Row/Wideawake releases Danny Boy's long awaited debut album with a majority of the production handled by DJ Quik! My favorite cut off the album is "Steppin" that features the classic DJ Quik/G-One sound many of us grew to love in the 90's into the 2000's. Danny Boy was always one of my favorite R&B artist of the 90's and he never released an album! Hopefully Wideawake will wake up this year and release an O.G. 2Pac album! But don't forget Danny Boy's "It's About Time" is available in stores and online!

R.I.P. Guru
Incredible lyricist and Gangstarr frontman Keith "Guru" Elam passed away April 19th after a battle with cancer. He was just 43 years old. Now I grew up listening to Gangstarr thanks to my big bro. He had all of the Gangstarr tapes/CD's and his first two Jazzmatazz releases. Something about Gurus voice over Premiers beats was what my definition of hip-hop was as a kid. I have mixed feelings about this, because although Guru was a talented artist, after reading the letter Guru supposedly "wrote", he seems to bash a certain ex-dj. Now I personally don't know the background story behind Gangstarrs split, but it has come to my attention the bitterness Guru expressed towards Premier in interviews up till his passing. Seems like that Solar dude is on his business. To me when I think of Guru, Gangstarr is the first thing that comes to mind and nothing will ever change that. I'd have to say the groups 1998 album "Moment of Truth" is one of my favorite Hip-Hop albums of all-time. The first beat I rhymed on tape to was "You Know My Steez"! So rest in peace Guru, you truly were and are...Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal. PeaceUPDATE: Guru's family issues statement READ HERE.

Timeless Screening with J.Rocc x Afterparty
With* B+ (Mochilla – LA)
* Coleman (Mochilla – LA)
* Sean Cee
at HG Lodge
Timeless because a heart beat is always more important than a clock tick.
Timeless, featuring the works of J Dilla (Suite for Ma Dukes), Mulatu Astatke and Arthur Verocai will screen its Seattle premiere Friday April 30 at 6 p.m. in Seattle Art Museum’s Nordstrom Lecture Hall. Rather than showing all three films back to back or a screener edit of all three films, we will instead do something historic: J Rocc of the World Famous Beat Junkies—possibly the greatest DJ on the planet right now—will DJ all three films, using the latest Serato technology. J Rocc will be manipulating the films using vinyl on turntables to control the hi-res film files, creating an amazing megamix of all three films. This, as far as we know, has never been done to premier a film or indeed a series of films ever. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with composer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, director B+ and co-director Eric Coleman.
Later that evening, we’ll celebrate Timeless with an after-party DJ’ed by J Rocc, and B+ and Coleman of Mochilla. The afterparty will be held at the recently opened HG Lodge at 722 E. Pike Street on Seattle’s Capitol Hill.

--This is gonna be extra dope! I've been watching the Youtube videos of these amazing performances all year long and I'm excited I'll be in Sea-town that evening to experience it! Can't wait to see J-Rocc tear it up and the best part is the screening is FREE!!! I'll most likely hit up the after-party and enjoy the sounds. Here's one of the videos I mentioned earlier....Dwele performing "A.N.G.E.L." one of my faves!

Here's an interview from one of my favorite producers, DJ Premier. Suite903 sits down with Premo and talks about some of his favorite current soul singers, artists live performances, sampling, crate digging (my favorite!), appreciating music and staying excited in music. True words of wisdom from one of the greats!

Malcolm Mclaren R.I.P.
Rest in peace to UK artist/manager Malcolm Mclaren. I absolutely loved his Duck Rock LP, which featured the hit "Buffalo Gals", one of the first music videos to introduce hip-hop and especially b-boying to the U.K. Didn't know dude was also the manager of the legendary Sex Pistols! But my favorite would have to be "World Famous (Radio I.D.)" off of the "D'ya Like Scratchin?" LP. When the group The Firm sampled it for "Firm Biz (remix)", I remember my friends and I were geeked when we found the original! So big ups to Malcolm, remember if it wasn't him we also wouldn't have the classic "Hey DJ"! Check out the video for "Buffalo Gals".....
